How I’m Promoting My Upcoming Article on ‘Deinfluencing’

As I wrap up the wording and finalize the imagery for my current Medium.com project, I’ve been testing out promotional content to get people excited about reading my work! To attract the most readers and most appropriate audience possible, I’ve taken to LinkedIn, Facebook, and Threads to get some marketing material circulating. Here’s what I have cooking:

LinkedIn

Are we witnessing a true transformation or just another trend?

Once at the forefront of trend pushing, a select few online influencers have begun to publicly denounce materialism and are now refocusing their efforts on a more conscious approach to consumption. Known to the TikTok community as “deinfluencing,” the countercultural videos now educate viewers about monetization tactics and caution against being misled by the self-proclaimed “expertise” of fellow content creators. This change could signify a profound shift in perspective where these people, aware of the direct and indirect costs of their influence, are reinventing their role as trendsetters. Or, could this be a calculated attempt to regain the trust of once-loyal followers as more and more users discover that not every product is as glamorous as advertised? Join the conversation and decide for yourself after checking my new article about redefining influence.

I tailored this LinkedIn post to resonate with a more professional audience, making sure that the content and prose aligned with the elevated standards of that particular platform. The hashtags were strategically chosen because they’re specific enough to entice readers who are searching for a topic as unique as deinfluencing, but popular enough to draw users from a wide range of industries (e.g. marketing, merchandising, social media). I used Canva to design a simple but intriguing image. The style is popular among LinkedIn creators but exclusive to the message of my article.

Beyond the glowy filters and glamorous unboxing videos, a de-influencing movement is unfolding among TikTok content creators ✨ Once fueled by PR packages and monetized posts, this consumer awakening to the illusions of influencer marketing have triggered a countercultural shift towards conscious consumption 🔎 Read more here: https://medium.com/fall-2023-writing-for-interactive-media-icm-506

I adopted my Facebook post to suit a casual yet informed audience, striking a balance between approachability, conciseness, and cleverness. My use of subtle emojis should make the content more visually appealing and encourage interaction from anyone who’s previously indicated interest in TikTok or influencer-related topics while scrolling on the app. Like my LinkedIn post, I curated this image in Canva to illustrate the very real consequences of trend pushing, overconsumption, and overspending, then drew the connection to TikTok by using their brand colors and fonts.

Threads

Your thoughtful reminder just in case you forgot!

Don’t worry, you’re not the only one who’s easily influenced, and trend pushing is not something to be overlooked. Thankfully, certain creators are using their platforms to promote healthier shopping habits and are giving us a glimpse into the illusion behind influencer marketing. So, let’s dive into the movement towards mindful consumption, together 🙂

Finally, my approach for my Threads post was to vibe with and relate to the laid-back user base, keeping it conversational yet making it clear that I had important things to say to those who also experience the negative effects of influencer marketing. The single hashtag keeps the content uncomplicated and uncluttered, and my Canva graphic is aesthetically pleasing and highly shareable!
